People often think the “air puff” or eye pressure measurement is THE test for glaucoma. However, while high eye pressure is a risk factor that sometimes indicates glaucoma, patients with low or normal eye pressure may also have glaucoma and not be aware of it. Ultimately, glaucoma is a nerve disease that is most accurately identified by examining the optic nerve.
The HRT3 is an instrument that uses laser technology to produce a 3-D topographical image of a patient’s optic nerve. This image allows the doctor to make an objective analysis of the cup, rim, and retinal nerve fiber layer. It’s currently the best means of monitoring optic nerve change over time and is an essential element in providing effective ongoing treatment for glaucoma.
