Refractive Surgery (i.e. LASIK or PRK)
There are many types of refractive surgery currently being performed, with LASIK and PRK the most predominant. Our goal is to educate patients regarding possible outcomes as a consequence of refractive surgery. Please see the excellent articles at allaboutvision.com.
Should you decide that refractive surgery is for you, our clinic performs all pre- and post-operative segments of your procedure. Most importantly, we will let you know if you are a good candidate for the specific procedure.
The intra-operative part of the procedure will be performed by The Laser Eye Center of Hawaii in Honolulu. We have chosen The Laser Eye Center of Hawaii for two very important reasons: 1) they have the most experienced laser eye doctors in the state of Hawaii; and 2) the Laser Eye Center of Hawaii understands our role in this procedure. They will not be giving you another eye examination or measuring your prescription — that is our specialty, as Optometrists.
Not all laser doctors or large laser centers use this co-management approach. From our years of experience with co-managed care, we can say without hesitation that this approach yields more favorable clinical outcomes than when all phases of the procedure are ‘done in-house’. It also has the added bonus of saving you the additional time and trouble of traveling to Honolulu for anything but the surgery itself.
After your procedure, we resume all follow-up care and can manage any possible complications refractively and therapeutically as needed — right here in Hilo.
